Aquarium Plants

My views, Steve Hampton, on how to succeed with aquarium plants

Stargrass (Heteranthera zosterifolia)

Common name or synonym: Stargrass

Scientific name: Heteranthera zosterifolia

Pronunciation: het-er-AN-ther-uh zoh-ster-ee-FOH-lee-uh

Family: Pontederiaceae

Origin or range: Central and South America

Type of Plant: Stem

Difficulty: Easy

Area of tank best suited for: Foreground, Midground, Background

Plant light requirements: Moderate

Propagation: Cuttings and side shoots

General plant notes: Great plant that is easy to grow but does offer a challenge in maintenance. Without careful watch this plant can quickly become untidy and unkempt looking in your tank. It can be forced to grow low and form an almost carpet like growth. Frequent pruning will spur this plant into producing lots of side shoots and become very bushy. The bottom leaves will turn black if shaded or micronutrient starved.
