Aquarium Plants

My views, Steve Hampton, on how to succeed with aquarium plants

Gymnocoronis spilanthoides

Common name or synonym: Spade Leaf

Scientific name: Gymnocoronis spilanthoides

Pronunciation: jim-no-KORO-nis spil-anth-OY-deez

Family: Asteraceae

Origin or range: South America

Type of Plant: Stem

Difficulty: Easy

Area of tank best suited for: Midground to Background

Plant light requirements: Moderate

Propagation: Cuttings and side shoots

General plant notes: A very tolerant plant which does well in hard and soft water and most pH’s. Spade Leaf is a very good nutrient sponge. They soak nutrients out of the water at an incredible rate, and use it to grow very quickly to the surface of the water and beyond. When grown to a height that is too tall, simple cut the top and replant. Emmersed growth seems to have no problem surviving when submerged. It also makes an excellent pond plant.
