Aquarium Plants

My views, Steve Hampton, on how to succeed with aquarium plants

Limnophila aromatica

Common name or synonym: Limnophila aromatica

Scientific name: Limnophila aromatica

Pronunciation: lim-no-FIL-uh ar-oh-MAT-ih-kuh

Family: Scrophulariaceae

Origin or range: Asia

Type of Plant: Stem

Difficulty: Moderate

Area of tank best suited for: Midground to background

Plant light requirements: Bright

Propagation: Cuttings and side shoots

General plant notes: Extremely attractive plant when given favorable conditions. It is often used as the focal point due to its intense coloration and leave texture. Providing high intensity lighting is critical to having this plant display properly. Some report success with nitrat limitation, but personally I've found that increasing phosphates and iron/trace nutrients produce results that are equal even when nitrate is not limited...a condition other plants might not preform as well with. Given the amount of light this plant needs CO2 injection is almost an absolute necessity.
