Aquarium Plants

My views, Steve Hampton, on how to succeed with aquarium plants

Hygrophila balsamica

Common name or synonym: Hygrophila balsamica

Scientific name: Hygrophila balsamica

Pronunciation: hy-GRO-fill-uh bal-SAM-ick-uh

Family: Acanthaceae

Origin or range: India, Sri Lanka

Type of Plant: Stem

Difficulty: Easy

Area of tank best suited for: Midground to Background

Plant light requirements: Moderate

Propagation: Cuttings and side shoots

General plant notes: Very interesting and decorative plant not widely available. Care must be taken to insure that the plant was grown submersed before planting into your tank with fish. The emersed form of this plants leaves will release a toxin that kills fish, but is completely harmless and unproblematic in submersed form. The leaves are needle-like and bright green. The plant developes lots of side shoots and can form a nice bushy green contrast to red stem plants.
